4. Blades of Exile

Exile is a series of role-playing video games created by Jeff Vogel of Spiderweb Software. Blades of Exile is one of the four games released in the series. It consists of three short scenarios set after the main trilogy as well as an editor that allows players to create their own scenarios, which need not be set in the Exile game world at all. Several hundred custom-made scenarios have been designed since the release of the game in 1997. Blade of Exile supports Windows and Macintosh.



BZFlag is a free online multiplayer 3D tank battle game. The name originates from "Battle Zone Capture The Flag". It runs on Windows, Mac OSX, Linux, BSD, and other platforms. It was one of the most popular games ever on Silicon Graphics machines and continues to be developed and improved.


6. Dungeon Crawl Stone Soup

Dungeon Crawl Stone Soup is a free roguelike game of exploration and treasure-hunting in dungeons filled with dangerous and unfriendly monsters in a quest for the mystifyingly fabulous Orb of Zot.   Dungeon Crawl Stone Soup has diverse species and many different character backgrounds to choose from, deep tactical game-play, sophisticated magic, religion and skill systems, and a grand variety of monsters to fight and run from, making each game unique and challenging.

Dungeon Crawl Stone Soup can be played offline, or online on a public telnet/ssh server thanks to the good folks at crawl.akrasiac.org (CAO) and crawl.develz.org (CDO). These public servers allow you to meet other players’ ghosts, watch other people playing, and, in general, have a blast! The game supports Windows and Mac OS X.


7. FlightGear

FlightGear Open Source Games

FlightGear is an open-source flight simulator.  It supports a variety of popular platforms (Windows, Mac, Linux, etc.) and is developed by skilled volunteers from around the world.  Source code for the entire project is available and licensed under the GNU General Public License.

The goal of the FlightGear project is to create a sophisticated and open flight simulator framework for use in research or academic environments, pilot training, as an industry engineering tool, for DIY-ers to pursue their favorite interesting flight simulation idea, and last but certainly not least as a fun, realistic, and challenging desktop flight simulator.


8. Freeciv

Freeciv is a Free and Open Source empire-building strategy game inspired by the history of human civilization. The game commences in prehistory and your mission is to lead your tribe from the Stone Age to the Space Age. Freeciv is supported on Windows and Mac OS X.

FreeCol is a turn-based strategy game based on the old game Colonization, and similar to Civilization. The objective of the game is to create an independent nation. You start with only a few colonists defying the stormy seas in their search for new land. The FreeCol aims to create an Open Source version of Colonization. FreeCol supports Windows and Mac OS X.

The Freedoom project aims to create a complete Doom-based game which is Free Software. 11. FreedroidRPG

FreedroidRPG aims to provide a popular reference game in the open-source world. The goal is to do so through the implementation of an immersive world with distinctive dialog and graphical styles in a format that is friendly to all ages while providing a fair amount of choice to the player. FreedroidRPG features a real time combat system with melee and ranged weapons, fairly similar to the proprietary game Diablo. There is an innovative system of programs that can be run in order to take control of enemy robots, alter their behavior, or improve one’s characteristics. You can use over 50 different kinds of items and fight countless enemies on your way to your destiny. An advanced dialog system provides story background and immersive role playing situations. 12. FreedroidClassic

FreedroidClassic also aims to provide a popular reference game in the open-source world. The aim of the game is to destroy all enemy robots by either shooting them or seizing control over them by creating connections in a short subgame of electric circuits. The graphics are designed to be a fairly faithful reproduction of the original game, but a modern set of tiles is also available. The game runs on Windows, Linux and Mac OS X.


13. GNU Chess

14. Hedgewars

Hedgewars Open Source Games

Hedgewars is free open-source software. It is a turn based strategy, artillery, action and comedy game, featuring the antics of pink hedgehogs with attitude as they battle from the depths of hell to the depths of space. As commander, it’s your job to assemble your crack team of hedgehog soldiers and bring the war to your enemy. It is supported on Windows and Linux.


15. M.A.X.R. (Mechanized Assault and eXploration Reloaded)

MAXR Open Source Games

M.A.X.R. (Mechanized Assault and eXploration Reloaded) is a fanmade strategy game by the community of maxr.org. M.A.X.R. is OpenSource and a remake of the old M.A.X. by Interplay from 1996 featuring network games based on TCP/IP (e.g. over the internet). The game can be played in a turn-based mode (with or without time limit), or simultaneous mode (all the players take their turns at the same time), and features combat in air, land, and sea. Three resources are present on the maps – raw materials, that are needed to manufacture units, structures and ammunition, fuel, that power generators need to function, and gold, that is used to purchase upgrades. This game is a mix of realtime and turnbased strategy with battle chess character. MAXR works on Fedora Linux, GNU/ Linux, Windows and Mac OS X.


16. Netrek

Netrek is a multi-player battle simulation with a Star Trek theme. As a player, you captain starships to engage enemy vessels, bomb armies and invade planets in order to expand your team’s space empire. 17. Oolite

Oolite is a space sim game, inspired by Elite, powered by Objective-C and OpenGL, and designed as a small game that is easy for users to pick up, modify and expand upon. Almost every aspect of the game can be changed by using simple, free graphics packages and text editors.
Originally written for Mac OS X, Oolite is available for Mac OS X (10.4 and higher) and PCs running Windows XP, Windows Vista or Linux


18. OpenArena

OpenArena is a free (as in freedom) network enabled multiplayer first person shooter based on the ioquake3 fork of the id tech 3 engine.
It aims to be a free software clone of Quake III Arena, retaining it’s gameplay while replacing the propietary content with brand new free (as in freedom, again) content. Its goal is to create new, original media while providing a stand-alone multiplayer game in the process.


19. OpenDune

OpenDUNE is an open source re-creation of the popular game “Dune II”, originally made by Westwood Studios, and released by Virgin Entertainment. It attempts to re-create the original game and apply modern technology to it to allow it to be run natively on most operating systems. OpenDUNE is licensed under the GNU General Public License version 2.0. It supports Windows and Linux.


20. OpenTTD

OpenTTD is an open source simulation game based upon the popular Microprose game "Transport Tycoon Deluxe", written by Chris Sawyer. It attempts to mimic the original game as closely as possible while extending it with new features. OpenTTD is licensed under the GNU General Public License version 2.0.

Speed Dreams is a fork of the open racing car simulator Torcs, aiming to implement exciting new features, cars, tracks and AI opponents to make a more enjoyable game for the player, as well as constantly improving visual and physics realism. For the moment, the supported platforms are Linux (x86, x86_64) and 32 bit Windows. The Mac OS X port is in progress.

Warzone 2100 is an open source real-time strategy and real-time tactics hybrid computer game. In Warzone 2100, you command the forces of The Project in a battle to rebuild the world after mankind has almost been destroyed by nuclear missiles. The game offers campaign, multi-player, and single-player skirmish modes. 1. Cube

Cube is an open source multiplayer and single player first person shooter game built on an entirely new and very unconventional engine. Cube is a landscape-style engine that pretends to be an indoor FPS engine. It  combines very high precision dynamic occlusion culling with a form of geometric mipmapping.It Uses OpenGL & SDL.

2. Cube 2: Sauerbraten

Cube 2: Sauerbraten is a free open soure multiplayer / single player first person shooter, built as a major redesign of the Cube FPS.

4. Fight Win Prevail

Fight Win Prevail (or FWP for short) is a free open source multiplayer first person shooter.

The game is set in an imaginary universe where fearless pilots fight to the death with their futuristic vehicles. Gameplay lies somewhere between the Mechwarrior-series and Quake 3. It is faster and more action-orientated than in Mechwarrior, but tries to avoid the ‘jump-around-like-crazy-and-fire-at-everything-that-moves’-gameplay known from Quake 3.

Fight Win Prevail is a pure multiplayer game and does not have a real singleplayer mode. Primary target are LANs, but the game is playable over the internet, too.

Its a free open source Doom game powered by Doom Engine. In FreeDoom, a Doom WAD file is used instead of the copyrighted file from the original Doom and Doom II.

OpenArena is a Free Open content package for the id tech3 GPL source code package.  OpenArena is a violent, sexy, multiplayer first person shooter based on the ioquake3 fork of the id tech 3 engine. It has many game types beyond deathmatch and a lot of characters. Due to violent and racy content, it  may not be suitable for children under 17.

1. The Battle for Wesnoth

The Battle for Wesnoth is a free open source turn-based strategy game with a fantasy theme. You build up a great army by gradually turning raw recruits into hardened veterans. Later in the game, you recall your toughest warriors and form a deadly host against whom no one can stand! Choose the units from a large pool of specialists, and hand-pick a force with the right strengths to fight well on different terrains against all types of opposition.

The world of Wesnoth is very huge and limited only by your creativity. You can make your own custom units, compose your own maps, and write your own scenarios. You can also challenge up to 8 friends – or strangers – and fight in epic multi-player fantasy battles.

2. Tremulous

Tremulous is a free, open source game that blends a team based first person shooter with elements of a real time strategy. Players can choose from 2 unique races i.e aliens and humans. Players on both teams are able to build working structures in-game like a real time strategy. These structures provide many functions, the most important being spawning. The designated builders must ensure there are spawn structures or other players will not be able to rejoin the game after death. Other structures provide automated base defense (to some degree), healing functions and much more…
Player advancement is different depending on which team you are on. As a human, players are rewarded with credits for each alien kill. These credits may be used to purchase new weapons and upgrades from the “Armoury”. The alien team advances quite differently. Upon killing a human foe, the alien is able to evolve into a new class. The more kills gained the more powerful the classes available.

The overall objective behind Tremulous is to eliminate the opposing team. This is achieved by not only killing the opposing players but also removing their ability to respawn by destroying their spawn structures.

War§ow is one of the best open source first-person shooter game designed to play online. There are many many games that were inspired by War§ow but still War§ow has been very unique. The Gameplay focused on speed, trick jumps and the art of movement.

4. Scorched 3D

Scorched 3D is a simple turn-based artillery game that is free and open source. It is also a real-time strategy game in which players can counter each others’ weapons with other creative accessories, shields and tactics. Scorched 3D incorporates a lively three dimensional landscape that includes animated jets, naval vessels, water, and even birds, in addition to detailed tanks and projectiles. Scorched 3D is actually a modernization of the classic DOS game Scorched Earth “The Mother Of All Games” on which it is based.. One can play over LAN and internet play.

Alien Invasion is a free game, licensed under GNU GPL, heavily inspired by the X-COM series by Mythos and Microprose. It is is a strategy game featuring tactical combat against hostile alien forces which are about to infiltrate earth at this very moment. You are in command of a small special unit which has been founded to face the alien strike force. To be successful on the long run, you will also have to have a research team study the aliens and their technologies in order to learn as much as possible about their technology, their goals and the aliens themselves.

10. Complete Annihilation

Complete Annihilation is a game for the  Spring RTS engine. It traces its heritage to Total Annihilation (often referred to as Original Total Annihilation or OTA), a 1997 PC RTS by Cavedog Entertainment. However, CA is not OTA. It is gradually moving away from OTA, replacing the copyrighted models and textures with open-source ones while refining and improving the gameplay. CA aims to be a dynamic, action-packed, hassle-free game, full of clever strategies and constantly moving combat.
