Universal Chat clients increase user experience

A multiprotocol instant messaging application is a client software comprised of an IM application which can seamlessly connect to multiple IM networks (via Wikipedia). These IM clients can connect to AOL Instant Messenger, ICQ, Jabber (including Google Talk, Gizmo, and other Jabber-based networks), MSN Messenger, Yahoo! Messenger etc.

The major ad-supported, commercial IM networks have many times attempted to block multi-protocol clients through rapid small changes to their protocols. However, the relentless efforts by multi-protocol clients developers to restore the interoperability between these networks eventually made them realize that they could not oppose the development of multi-protocol clients anyway.

Main advantage of multiprotocol IM clients is that it provides an unified interface using witch one can login to multiple IM networks such as AOL IM, Yahoo Messenger, Gtalk etc

There are many such multi-protocol IM clients out there. Here are the best ones that you could try. We will keep updating this post for more IM clients like Adium, iChat and Proteus for Mac OS soon.

Multi-protocol IM clients

Enomaly’s Open Source Elastic Computing Platform

While the IT departments are worrying about the security, governance and other concerns related to Cloud computing, Enomaly makes it possible to create Cloud-like environments in corporate data enters.

Elastic Computing Platform 2.1 an open source project, provides the ability to meld on-premises and remote systems–including cloud services–in a single, secure infrastructure.

Elastic Computing Platform (ECP) is a programmable virtual loud infrastructure for businesses who are looking to design, deploy and manage virtual applications in cloud. The browser based dash board enables IT department top efficiently plan deployments, automate virtual machine scaling  and load balancing, and analyze the configuration, optimize cloud capacity in an easy-to-use utility.

As relying on cloud computing is becoming a drawback due to privacy, security, and reliability concerns, there interest for open-source cloud-computing tools is increasing as the source code is freely available. These tools could help companies to build and customize their own computing clouds to work alongside more powerful commercial solutions.

Some of the popular open-source cloud-computing software are

1. Eucalyptus

An open source software infrastructure project that imitates the experience of using EC2 but lets the user run program on their own resource and provides a detail view, what would have otherwise looked like a black box of cloud computing services.

2. Globus Nimbus

Nimbus is a set of open source tools that together provide an “Infrastructure-as-a-Service” (IaaS) cloud computing solution. Nimbus allows a client to lease remote resources by deploying virtual machines (VMs) on those resources and configuring them to represent an environment desired by the user.

3. OpenNebula

OpenNebula is an open source virtual infrastructure engine that enables the dynamic deployment and re-placement of virtual machines on a pool of physical resources. OpenNebula extends the benefits of virtualization platforms from a single physical resource to a pool of resources, decoupling the server not only from the physical infrastructure but also from the physical location.

Architecture diagrams for open source projects

We had earlier posted an article on static code analysis done be Coverity Scan. Now, there is even more interesting stuff that they have for us!

Coverity Scan has recently released the Architecture Library – A collection of architecture data files, and directory and file relationship diagrams for over 2,500 open source software projects, all released under a Creative Commons Attribution license. Here is the Press Release text.

This is nice and will help the developer community to study the successful projects and learn from the architecture. For a beginner it is often difficult to understand the code layout and structure. Coverity’s architecture library will definitely be handy as it has clear component level details of most of the known projects.

Each of the architecture diagrams in the Library have been generated using Coverity Architecture Analyzer. The tool uses information gathered during the build of a codebase to create a comprehensive list of interdependencies in the code. These dependencies can be investigated interactively with the Architecture Analyzer desktop application. It can also be used to generate diagrams like the one shown on the right.

This diagram shows a version of the Apache webserver, displayed at the directory level, with all dependencies between files rolled up into the file’s directory. Some minor directories have been omitted to simplify the diagram.

The full collection of diagrams for a wide variety of C and C++ open source projects can be browsed By Category or By Name.

Declining market for Internet Explorer

Firefox 3.0 is indeed grabbing the browser market share. StatCounter report clearly shows that the Firefox 3.0 has already captured the IE 6.0 market share and looks strong to get to IE 7.0 in the near future.

The open source browser, Firefox rose to 24 percent of users in February while IE6 dipped to just over 22.6 percent, making Firefox the second most popular browser by individual version. Internet Explorer 7 may still lead the show with 40.8 percent, But the Firefox usage increase narrows the gap as Microsoft’s browser has remained largely flat since at least July.

Browser Usage Statistics

Source: StatCounter

Report also shows that the individuals prefer to switch to Firefox 3.0 instead of IE 7.0. Mainly because IE 7.0 is for windows platform alone but Firefox rules over all platforms including Windows, its Free, faster and has a ton of Plug-in support.

Small players like Opera 9 is at about 1.9 percent share, while Safari 3 is at 1.6 percent. Opera too is slightly gaining the momentum and grabbed a small portion of the growing trend.

We have to wait and see if IE 8.0 helps MS to gain its browser market share once again!
